We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Communications Officer to join our team.
The successful candidate will play a vital role in supporting the organisation to implement its communications strategies with an emphasis on copywriting, media relations, and communications support, under the direction of the Coordinator Media and Communications.
Key Responsibilities:
- Produce effective and targeted external communications campaigns and publications, to promote objectives
- Contribute to the dissemination of key corporate messages, ensuring they support Council's strategic and corporate direction
- Research, write, distribute and or edit publications, as required, including community newsletters and e-newsletters
- Act as in-house photographer to meet Executive and media requirements
- Research, write and distribute media releases, speeches, articles and other written materials that are relevant, timely and accurate and have high impact, as required
- Act as an organisational Editor, by reviewing publications and communications to maintain consistent messaging
- Work closely with media staff to liaise with local, metropolitan and specialist media, ensuring organisation's reputation is managed and we are responsive to media requests, providing information that is relevant, timely and accurate
- Identify opportunities for good news stories, developing these news items or story lines and placing them as effectively as possible within the media
- Maintain a high awareness to political sensitivities and confidential items, and managing the communication aspects of these issues effectively
- Provide communications advice to internal customers, as one of the Communications Unit’s Communications Partners
- Prepare Communications Plans for internal customers to support their campaigns, projects, programs, events and initiatives
Key Requirements:
- Tertiary qualifications in a relevant communications field, or relevant industry or news media experience
- At least five year's experience in the news media or public relations, preferably within a Government context with exposure to different types of news media
- Experience in developing and implementing effective communications strategies and activities
- Demonstrated experience in producing and editing high-quality communications content
- Excellent written communication skills, including experience in preparing media stories and or media releases and supporting materials, speeches and publications
- Ability to develop and maintain a network of media contacts across a range of local, metropolitan and specialist news media
- Ability to develop and implement effective media and communications strategies that increase the positive profile of an organisation and raise public understanding of its programs and services
- Experience of working collaboratively as part of a team, and in cross-functional workplace teams, to achieve agreed outcomes
- Strong skills in a range of relevant computer applications and experience in preparing corporate publication
